Here's a lovely little review from the Secret World Of Books blog about Val Anne Lee's The Monkey Who Wouldn't Eat Nuts:
Rating: FIVE STARS
Why I rated it 5/5 stars: The front cover is black with a bright yellow title and border, with a monkey who has a ginormous nose! Children will find Old Mange’s food combinations hilarious - boiled fish with apple pie being one of them! The illustrations are beautifully created. The many colourful pictures include zoo settings, a variety of animals, hilarious facial expressions and lots of nuts! There is an aspect of diversity within the story. A group of children are on a school trip with their teacher - they have ginger, brown and blonde hair, one is black and one girl is mixed race wearing a hijab. Other characters include a zoo keeper, a vet, a dentist, other animals such as giraffes, flamingoes, snakes, kangaroos, penguins, and many more. This fun and clever story makes children aware of what happens to animals that live in a zoo including going to the dentist, having regular meals and disliking certain foods just like people. In addition to all the wonderful aspects this book has, there is a colouring page at the back, of Old Mange cleaning his teeth! The message of the story is to eat well and to always clean your teeth, or you might have your teeth taken out by the dentist!
